On Some Critique of Joseph M. Bocheński’s Conception of Analogy

Abstract

In the article I try to explain what M.A. Krąpiec means when he expresses his opinion on J.M. Bocheński’s conception of analogy. The considerations are arranged into three parts. In the first, I present Bocheński’s main statements concerning the analogy and discuss them briefly. This is necessary in order to avoid terminological misunderstandings; in his description of analogy Bocheński uses technical terms which are isomorphic – but not synonymic – with the terms used in Krąpiec’s metaphysical system and the opinion is an element of this system. The second part is devoted directly to Krąpiec’s reflection on Bocheński’s conception of analogy. In general, it begins with a text from Analogia w filozofii (that passage contains the essence of the reflection) and consists of commentaries to the main statements thereof. These commentaries concern Krąpiec’s conceptions of analogy of being and analogical cognition. In the last part, I enumerate the data that are the most important for the interpretation of Bocheński’s conception of analogy from Krąpiec’s point of view.

Keywords: analogous name, analogy of being, analogous cognition, univocal cognition, Mieczysław A. Krąpiec, Joseph M. Bocheński.
