Spojrzenie w górę. Ukrzyżowanie według Gracjana Kaji

Mateusz Soliński

Abstract

The article refers to Gracjan Kaja’s artistic installation entitled “Looking up.” The artist born in Bydgoszcz created an installation consisting of three parts – three huge (each three meters high) crucifixes. Each holly rood is different. In his installation, Kaja evokes the history of the representation in art of the crucified Jesus Christ. One of the crucifixes refers to the presentations of the Crucified in modern art – especially to the paintings of Francis Bacon. The central part of the installation is a cross with a plaster sculpture of Christ, fashioned after the Crucifixion from the Isenheim Altarpiece made by Matthias Grünewald. The sculpture of Gracjan Kaja is extremely realistic. It is a masterful depiction of the horrific agony, with Christ’s body writhing under the pain from the nails driven through his hands and feet. Gracjan Kaja shows his great skill as a talented craftsman and sculptor.
